I was commissioned by a friend of mine from high school to do this portrait of a newborn baby.

On a side note, sorry for the lack of updates. I've been working on freelance and searching high and low for a full time job. Hopefully an employer will get back to me soon, but in the mean time I hope you enjoy this drawing. I haven't worked with rendering graphite in quite a while so it was fun.

I Found Christmas - Drawing

One of my mother's favorite Christmas memories is from when I was a little boy. We were getting out the Christmas decorations from the closet under the stairs in the basement, and as we were opening the boxes, I reached into one of them and pulled out a string of sleigh bells. I held the bells into the air, looked at my mom, and said "I found Christmas!" It brought a smile to her face and reminded her that that is what Christmas is all about.

As fun as it is to receive gifts from those who care about you, sometimes the simplest of things mean the most. I sketched this up for my mom for Christmas this year. I had thought about coloring it traditionally, but then thought I could achieve some nice lighting, or better lighting, if I did it digitally. I wanted to share the sketch before I leave to go home and hopefully I will get a chance to finish the colors before I leave as well.

What do you do when you finish grad school in animation? Why you go to CTN in Burbank of course!

Finishing school last Thursday and then immediately driving down to Burbank afterwards was a great feeling. The realization that I am done with school and can now go to where the industry is was awesome and perfect timing.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with CTN, check out their website. You can also check out last years blog post about it too for what it's like and how last year was. This year though was pretty spectacualr and I thought I'd discuss the highlights.

I was lucky enough to get 2 interviews last Friday at CTN. I had them with Pepper Films and Duncan Studios. Both of the interviews went really well, I thought, and I hope to hear back from them soon. I've been a little down and out about my work this semester so it was great to hear that studios like my work and that I have a lot of potential.

One of my favorite panels happened Friday night. I got a front row seat to hear Andreas Deja speak about animation, which was kind of like watching his blog come to life.

After Andreas was done speaking though, he had a surprise guest for everyone, which was none other than the legendary Disney composer, Richard Sherman. He told some great stories about the old days at the Disney Studios and Walt. What was really special though was watching him play piano and listening to him sing some classic Disney songs. He played everything from Mary Poppins to Jungle Book. It was truly a special moment that I will never forget.

Saturday was my day to go around and check out all of the artists and demonstrations going on throughout the day. There seemed to be a lot more artists this year than last year, which was pretty cool. Some highlights for me was watching one of my favorite instructors, Nicolas Villarreal, draw. His work is very inspiring and unique.

A very inspiring speaker that I got the pleasure to sit in on was Ryan Woodward. If you don't know Ryan, he created the short film Thought of You and has worked in the animation industry doing special effects. I felt like I could really relate to him and would like to create something like his film when I get a chance some day. Be sure to watch Thought of You. It's beautiful.

The highlight for me on Saturday was getting to see Tony Bancroft talk about his animation on Pumba in The Lion King. He brought along a bunch of other scenes that we could flip through too. It was fascinating to hold drawings from a feature film and see how they were working.

Watching Tony draw and speak about animation was cool, but what was even better was having dinner with him later that evening with some friends of mine. Tony's a really nice guy and it was a pleasure meeting and talking to him.

After dinner with Tony, we walked back over to the convention and caught a great panel with the directors of The Lion King. They talked about what it was like working on the film and shared some fun stories. When it was over, we all walked over to the other side of the convention for drinks and to rub elbows with all of the talent. Drinking and socializing in the same room filled with animation superstars is a pretty surreal and unique experience.

On Sunday, I woke up early to catch Alex Woo speak about gesture drawing. He works at Pixar and teaches at the Pixar University. His demonstration was very informative. I am eager to apply some of the things he talked about in my own drawings.

Of course, I always have to catch J. Scott Campbell drawing too. He's one of my favorites!

Sunday ended and concluded the event, but it's not over yet! Disney closed out the show by inviting 400 people to come to the Disney lot and watch some of their new shows that will be airing within the next month. We got to see the new Pixie Hollow movie with Tinkerbell and friends, the Phineas and Ferb Christmas Special, the new Disney short Lorenzo, and the new Prep & Landing short.

They were all really great. It was a great way to close the event and walking through the Disney ground and seeing the place where all of the magic happens, even if only from the outside, was pretty awesome.

There was so much going on and each day was packed with things to do. I could list even more details about the event and all of the great people that were there and things that happen, but I hope you got some kind of insite to my fun filled weekend at CTN.

Oh yeah, and this is some of the great art I brought home for inspiration and neat things I got!

Final Review & Petit Gâteau

It's been over a month since I last posted, and for that I am sorry, but there's a good reason for it. I have been super busy trying to finish school. My thesis film, Petit Gâteau, has taken over my life. Last Thursday, Nov. 17, I had my final review at AAU. I was a little nervous. I had been working on my film day in and out, but it still needs a lot of work. I presented what I had completed in front of my directer and two other instructors at school. They gave me some good feedback and asked me to leave the room so they could discuss my future. As the time ticked by and I stood in the hallway admiring the work on the walls, I was worried that I was going to have to stay another semester or present again in a few weeks. The door opened and to my surprise I passed my review! It didn't feel like I had passed though and it still hasn't hit me yet that I am done with school.

My film on the other hand still needs a ton of work and I will not be showing it until I am a little more proud of the animation in it. Making this film has been a huge learning experience for me. There are a lot of things I would do differently and I've learned a lot about animation and what I need to do next, which is basically revisit all of the animation and improve upon it. I really want to spend time on the acting and making the characters more believable and have more personality. Their designs speak for themselves, but the animation needs to speak more. Hopefully within the next few months you will see more updates on my film as I try to get it ready for AAU's Spring Show next semester.

In the mean time though, I can't wait to start working on personal work and sprucing up my portfolio/demo reel, and working in the industry. Oh and before I forget, I wanted to say thanks for everyone who checks out my work, has been following my blog, or has left a comment. I really appreciate the feedback and hearing what people think so feel free to leave a critique, opinion, or a comment of any kind.

The Aftermath of APE

Last weekend I attended the Alternative Press Expo (APE) in San Francisco and it was a great experience. There was a variety of different artists there selling their work and everyone was really nice. The best part about it was running into friends from school and watching friends that were in the show be successful and sell their work.

I was nervous about the show. It was my first time displaying my work to the public like that, but the general response was good. I got a lot of compliments and people liked my work, which was great to hear. I also got interviewed by popculturegeek.com, so as soon as that is up online you can check that out. Hopefully I don't look like an idiot, hahaha.

If you missed out on APE, didn't know it was going on, or live out of town, not to worry. I have put all of my stuff, well most of it, on my shop at bigcartel.com. Click the banner below to go there.

Never Gonna Let You Go

Last night I was watching Rihanna's music video for her song Cheers and her outfit reminded me of a mermaid so that's what inspired me to make this. I also wanted to make another piece for APE, so I have another original piece for sale! I may touch up the marker/colored pencil render in Photoshop and have it as a print if people like it.

I'm Gonna Build An Arcade!

A while back on my spring break, I completed plans to make my own arcade cabinet. I did a lot of research online and came up with a design that I wanted to make. It had to be able to play classic arcade games and play next gen games as well. I also designed it around the idea of having a 27" monitor.

I was hoping that over my spring break my father and I could make it and I could haul it back to California with me, but needless to say we ran out of time to make it happen. A little discouraged that we couldn't make it happen right away, I found out that my friend Ben, who owns his own computer company, use to make real cabinets for homes. So now we are going to make it happen!

I've been slowly saving my money for the parts and electronics. It's still going to be a little while before it's actually complete, but we should be able to start building the cabinet, or at least order the electronics for it, this October. I thought you'd enjoy seeing my designs though for it and some of the concept art I did for the speaker panel and the controls. As soon as I'm finished with my thesis, this is a project that will be going into full swing. *fingers crossed*

I'm super excited to have a real arcade in my apartment. I'm mostly excited around the idea of having an all in one game system. You'll basically be able to play any game from any system that you can think of on it and new games for PC. I will also be able to hook up old consoles to it if I choose to do so. It will have software to be a digital jukebox too! I can't wait to get this project started!

Man time flys! Sorry I haven't posted in what feels like forever. A lot has happened in the past month or so. I had my review at school and they are extending my film deadline for next semester so I will be spending the next 3 months finishing it to the best of my abilities. After that I took a mini vacation, had a birthday, and now I am back on track for the new (and last) semester!

Now on to more news!

I have a table at the Alternative Press Expo (APE) here in San Francisco! My table number is 415A. I am very excited, and a little nervous, to be presenting my work and myself to the public. So if you are in SF, you should swing by. It's taking place at the Concourse Exhibition Center on October 1 & 2, and it's only $15 for the weekend! That's a pretty awesome price to go see some talented folks.

I will update as time gets closer, but I will be selling a little sketchbook called Sketches Vol. 1. It's filled with 32 pages of exactly what the title says. I will also have bookmarks, buttons, prints, and original framed art for sale.

What happens when a Penguin, Giraffe, and the Lock Ness monster crawl through Shredder's Ooze? Well you'd get this. I call it a Penaffeness!

Creatures, robots, monsters, and demons are all things that are on my list to draw. I asked friends on facebook to list 3 animals and then I took those animals to make one single creature. It was a fun exercise. I then quickly put this layout together. I've been experimenting with different ways of displaying my work. I hope to come up with a creative and more professional solution soon. I will be doing more of these in my spare time in the future.

My talented friend Scotland Barnes mentioned the other day that he was thinking about drawing a mermaid. Then he decided to one-up my cowgirl sketch with one of his own. So I thought I'd beat him to the punch and draw a mermaid first. I'm sure he will retaliate with brute force.

Adrianne Curry posted a photo she did for Hollywood Dolls on twitter and I loved her expression and pose, so I did a little caricature of it and threw on some wings for a more gothic angel kind of look. It also allowed me to experiment with warm and cool grey Copic markers, which was the point behind doing this sketch. I got the texture on the shirt by actually using a black crayon for those who are curious.

Here's a quick look at how my thesis is progressing. This is my first pass at the 2nd scene. It's moving pretty fast. There are some parts that I need to add a few more drawings and some things to fix, but making progress is exciting. I need to add in his chair and the dishes on the table too. I have a lot of work to do by the end of this semester, but I've been working on it day in and out every day, so I'm hoping I can get it all done in time for my final review.

A few of my favs from the previous weeks

Wouldn't you know it! The semester is coming to an end and I finally find a technique that works for me in my clothed figure class. I was trying to approach drawing like how my instructor wanted me to, but I would lose the shapes and rhythm of the character. I have to feel my drawings with shapes and gesture. The last two weeks of class I picked up some nue pastels by Prismacolor. I messed around with them a bit and found that I could get the gesture down really quickly with white and then go back in with my charcoal. That really helped me a lot. Week 14 is when I played around with them and I think you can see how they helped me a lot today (week 15). We also had a great model today and drawing a pirate lass is a lot of fun. :)

Now that the class is over, I need to make sure that I attend workshops or get in a routine or going out and drawing people. It wouldn't seem like it would be that important, but you learn and gain so much from doing so. It also helps develop style and gives you time to experiment with different media and styles.

I believe this is the last of the layouts that my film was missing. There's only one spot left that I am iffy about, but I think I can get around it without drawing another layout. From here on out it'll be nothing, but animation. I'm not sure if I will be posting any of the animation on my blog until the film is complete. I'm finally getting back into the swing of things with my thesis. Here's a shot that I was trying to avoid making, but I feel like it's an important shot so I made it today. The reason I wanted to avoid it is because it's a little parallel and it's a one point perspective shot. I feel though that it's important to the film for certain story points so I believe it was a smart choice to include it. Hopefully when you see the film you will also agree.

Instead of having class today, I got to spend the day at WonderCon. I came across an animation gallery that was selling production work. They had some things for sale in all price ranges from $10 - $1500. I thought I'd find a cheap drawing for my apartment. Well they had a great selection and when I stumbled upon this one, I just had to get it. (I also had to get it because if I didn't, I'm pretty sure the friendly Chinese lady next to me was going to steal it.) It was a lot more than I had planned on spending, but for those of you who don't know me that well, The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney Movie when I was little. I loved the characters, the music, and the story. The Little Mermaid was the movie that made me say, I want to do that. I want to make animated films because I loved the way it made me feel and I loved drawing and the idea that these were moving drawings. I was only five years old at the time, but every time my parents took me to Blockbuster, we had to rent The Little Mermaid. I guess you could say that I have a soft spot for this film and this character. This will soon be framed and placed above my animation desk to remind me as to why I want to do this, why I should work hard for it, and why 2d animation is worth holding on to.

Slowly getting better. Week 7 is on the right and week 8 is on the left. We had a group discussion in class on our strengths and weaknesses so our instructor could get a better idea of what to help us on. It also felt good knowing that everyone is struggling with one thing or another. In a room full of illustrators I often feel intimidated because I'm more animation based. I don't want to make perfect drawings. In fact there are days that I just want to scribble all over the place, haha, but then I wouldn't get good marks in class.

I know my mother would agree with the above quote and I would have to approve, but not on behalf of myself, but on behalf of my brothers. Being the oldest in my family, I have watched my brothers turn into fine young gentlemen from the moment they were brought into my life. Pieces of me I can see in each of them, but each of them holds unique gifts that only they posses that I can only be inspired by to live up to. They speak with their eyes and their hearts. There is compassion in their voice and it lifts you up with wings of support that you know will never let you fall. If I could be more like anybody in the world, it wouldn't be a dead man, it wouldn't be a celebrity, it wouldn't be my most inspirational artists or friends, - it would be my brothers. If I could be as genuine and emotionally strong as them, perhaps I'd be a better man. If there was a disease eating me a live inside my body, would I still smile as if nothing was wrong? I try to live everyday like it is my last, but I know that I do not do it as well as my brothers. In a world where chivalry and romance is a dying art, it lives in them because they are gentlemen. They are my brothers. They are my inspiration. They are my heroes.

Here's a few more drawings from this semester from my clothed figure class. I'm starting to get back into the swing of things. It's hard to change styles and methods when you get comfortable with the way you enjoy working. I guess that's what school is for. This class is definitely pulling me out of my comfort zone. I just hope my grades don't suffer to much from it. You can see the differences even in the drawings above. The woman in the apron/dress are more recent drawings using the teachers approach and the woman with the jacket with her back towards us in the middle is a mixture of how I like to draw and the way we're suppose to in class. What's frustrating for me is that I like to draw fast with a lot of lines and rhythm and I can't do that here. I have to be precise and exact. I do feel like last week was the most successful and I'm going to use the same approach this week. Hopefully it works out.

My brother's girlfriend's birthday is this Friday and he asked me the other day to sketch something up for her. Her favorite Disney princess is Jasmine, so he asked me to draw them as Aladdin and Jasmine. Apparently they are also going to go as Agrabah's favorite couple for Halloween, so I'm looking forward to seeing how well they pull it off. I think they'll do a good job.

I started this animation back in 2009 and always wanted to get around to finishing it, so I spent my winter break working on it. I wanted to have it finished by the time classes started back up, but I missed it by a week. I then went back and fixed a few mistakes. It looks to me like vimeo made the lip-sync a little off too. I will have to double check that.

Animation to me has been the most difficult and rewarding artform that I have ever done. I'm glad that this animation is fleshed out and working, but now it's easy to see all of the mistakes or things that I could do to make it better. I don't know if I'll ever come back to this or just take what I learned from it and apply it to a new dialogue piece in the future. I feel like I never really got a grasp on the character till the end of it, which makes me want to go back and redraw some of the frames or really nail down her design. I also feel like I work too tightly still which is something I'm slowly getting better at. I need to draw looser and faster, which should come with practice and experience.

Skulls & Stuffed Animals

Last Friday, I went to the Academy of Sciences for class and we got to draw pretty much whatever we felt like, but we were to focus on the animal skulls and stuffed animal exhibits. The only real animal that I ended up drawing was an albino aligator that they had in a pit. One of the ladies who worked there actually got the aligator to move around and talk. It was funny because the alligators mannerisms were kind of like a dog. It was cute. These are the drawings from the day that I liked the most.

It's the 2nd week of the spring semester! Here are a few drawings I've done from my Clothed Figure 3 class. Hopefully you will see a lot more progression from these by the end of the semester. I haven't drawn in this style or used charcoal in quite some time. I'm a bit rusty I'm afraid. Hopefully I can attend a few workshops this semester to brush up on my skills.

The other class that I have this semester is Advanced Animal drawing, so you'll be seeing a lot of life drawings from me in the next 13 weeks. I'm really excited for that class because we aren't limited to a particular drawing style and I have freedom to experiment with drawing techniques, caricature, and different tools. My first trip is this Friday to draw some creatures and skeletons at the museum. I'm pretty excited about it and future trips to the zoo! :)

Hey There Stranger

A few months ago I asked my brother what he wanted for Christmas. He told me that he'd like a 5'8" brunette with blue eyes. Hahaha, I laughed to myself and then got to thinking that that would be a pretty cool Christmas gift, if I drew him up a little pin-up girl. Of course time got away from me, and I didn't have all of the things that I needed at home to make him one, so now that I'm on break, I have lots of time. I guess it's more of an early birthday gift now, but I'm sure he'll still enjoy it or at least make him smile. He's a bit of a cowboy himself so they should get a long nicely.

A Little Friday Night Reading

With most of my drawings I tend to focus a lot on detail and with this piece I wanted to try and stay away from that. I wanted to focus more on shapes and speed. It was fun to just draw and color and not really worry about if it's completely correct or not - so this was my experiment in shapes and color. Sometimes it's fun to just relax and do whatever comes natural or whatever comes to mind first. I didn't want to go too extreme/geometric with the character though either. Once upon a time in 5th grade, I had a crush on a really pretty blonde girl. We were really good friends. I thought she was amazing. She was beautiful and she was really smart. She was perfect! I of course was too shy to ask her out or tell her how I felt so we stayed good friends. Time goes by and she only blossoms to be even prettier then she was before...well because...lets just say she started changing before the other girls did. In high school, she dated the jocks and I dated the artsy girls. Six years later we're both going to grad school and she's still all brains and beauty. It's funny how time can whiz by, and when you visit people and places things are just as you left them years ago.

My friend Brooke from college did a fun 40's inspired shoot with some of her friends for fun and the photos turned out really nice. I decided to have a go at one of them and do a quick little sketch and throw on some quick markers. I tried a slightly different approach with things this time. I haven't quite decided how I want to apply the ink. In the others I applied it as a contour line and in this one I only accented sides with shadow. I really like the look of marker next to marker when it makes a seamless transition between colors. I was playing around with that idea a bit with this one.

This is also my last sketch for 2010. I'm looking forward to new work and experimentation for 2011. I hope you all brought the new year in with a bang and went out with style.

I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas! Santa found his way to my snow covered winter wonderland in the middle of the countryside. And guess what!? I got some of them Copic Markers! Yep, yep - so you know what that means? New sketches! Ok so continuing the theme, here's another drawing of Justine. I'm still experimenting with the markers, but I'm really liking the looks of these and can't wait to do some more. Maybe some sketches of iconic princess would turn out pretty cool. I have always loved drawing people and turing my lady friends into Princesses is kind of fun. Yeah I know I've only been doing head shots, but I'm thinking of doing some more, especially since I'm on break now. Yay! I asked Santa to bring me a Copic marker set and if he does then you'll be seeing a ton more of these kind of sketches. I really like drawing with this technique. I find it to be pretty fast and I like having an original piece of artwork to give a way. I'm still sort of experimenting in how I apply each medium and how I want things to look. For those who are interested I use a co-erase pencil for my sketch, I then add the markers to the sketch to add some quick colors, then I ink a few areas with an ink pen, and then I add some color pencil for detail and texture.

I also forgot to mention that I used reference for this one from my friend Stephanie. She gave me a great pic of Justine from the photo shoot that I helped her out with.

Princess Priscila

Last night I was at Fly bar, in SF, with some fellow AAU students celebrating my friend Priscila's birthday. She is also in the 2d animation department with me and she's an excellent animator. I thought I'd surprise her with a drawing of herself as a Disney character/princess since she loves Disney and wants to be a traditional animator like myself. Needless to say, she liked it.

CTN - X

The weekend has come and gone and The Creative Talent Network animation expo for 2010 is over, but it has left me with inspiration and motivation. For those who don't know, CTN is a convention for people working in and who want to work in animation. This is the 2nd year that they have held the convention and it is held at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Burbank, CA.

The convention is held for three days and during those three days you can attend different panels to get an inside look on artists and companies. Different panels are held all day long for different aspects of animation. There are talks about story, visual development, animation, behind the scenes of recent animated films, and everything else in between. To get an idea of the panels and the speakers you can check out the list on CTN's website.

Fastpass tickets got you to the front of the line for 3 panels that you really wanted to see

Not only could you sit in on speakers and presentations, but there where also artists doing demos live at different locations that you could watch in person and on TVs. An animator that I was most humbled to meet and talk to was Andreas Deja. He drew and animated some of the characters that he is known for during his demonstrations.

After Andreas was finished with his demonstration he signed and handed out the drawings that he had done. My friends and I were all lucky enough to get one.

I got Roger Rabbit, which was neat because I had asked him about how rough he would work and he did a quick gesture of Roger in the middle of drawing the nicer one.

One of the best parts though about going to any kind of convention like CTN is meeting artists, buying new artwork from your favorite artists or new artists, and finding new or rare books that you might not find anywhere else. I'm sure if I had some more money I would have bought a few more things as there was a fantastic amount of artists and work to browse through in the marketplace. I did manage to pick up a few things from a few of my favorites.

If you had some down time you could also draw from one of the models out in the atrium. The models were amazing and had great costumes and props. I unfortunately didn't get much of a chance to draw them since I was going to the panels and meeting companies and artists.

All in all though, CTN - X was a lot of fun. If you are looking into getting into the animation industry, I would highly suggest looking into coming to next years. I know I will be going again and I am sure next year will be even better than this year. Did you go to CTN? Let me know what you liked the most, and in the mean time, I've got some new books to look at and a lot of work to catch up on.

Jerry Head Sheet

Jerry's getting there. I've made a few more adjustments to his face and threw in some expressions for reference at the bottom. I'll probably end up doing another pass on this for the final and make the page portfolio worthy. I want to spruce up the title logo and page. I don't know if I'll put some kind of background on it either. I'm still playing with how the final presentation of the model sheets will look like, but don't worry it will be minimalistic.

This Wednesday my dialogue 3d animation is due for class. This is where I am at so far with it. I would like to polish it up as much as I can so I have a 3d piece to put on my demo reel. I'd love to get some feedback, so let me know what you think.

My next 3d piece is going to be half dialogue and half dance, so that should be interesting, challenging, and pretty fun. I feel like I'm getting a lot better with Maya, understanding how to use the rigs, and animating in 3d in general. The graph editor was giving me problems before, but I feel like I understand it now. I'd often find myself wanting to just draw the animation traditionally and getting frustrated, but I didn't have that problem this time. It actually went pretty smoothly.

I'm finishing up the last few layouts of my thesis. The lines are a little rougher than some previous ones, but I'm trying to get these done as fast as I can so I can move on to animation. I have one more that's almost done and another that needs to be fleshed out still, but they're almost there. There are a few details missing from this one that I will add in when I do the final graphite. The rolling pin needs drawn in on the bottom of the shot and the floor boards need to be drawn in. Any other texture will be added during graphite.

The shot below is an alternate angle of one I did for class. It was the shot that is looking down on the kitchen. This shot will be used instead in the completed film.

These are all pretty rough. I'm sure once I start animating that some of the design elements will be changed or simplified. Eventually I would like to clean these up and make the appropriate corrections. The back 3/4 view always end up being the trickiest for me to visualize. It is good knowing that the rough design process is finished and I can move a head now and finish that last few layouts that I need to complete and start animating! I'm excited to bring these characters to life and the challenges that I have a head of me to complete this film.

My best friend from my childhood is getting married this October and he asked me to do a caricature of him and his soon to be wife. The caricature is going to be on coozies that will be given out at the wedding as the wedding gift. I don't think I've ever had my work printed on anything before, so it'll be interesting to attend the wedding and see my illustration.

Jerry is the main character in my film. This is his new design. It's based off of his old design and some new ideas I had. I need to play around with his expressions and design his wheel chair next. I'll be redesigning his wife, Carol, here soon too. In the next few weeks I'm sure you'll be seeing some animation tests, so keep an eye for those. I'm excited to start animating, but I can't start until all of my design work has been finished.

Rascal is one the main characters in my thesis animation. I thought I'd share with you guys some of the turnarounds that I've done of him. This is his new design that I did of him towards the beginning of summer. I'm also redesigning my other characters. Scott Pilgrim vs The World!

If you haven't seen Scott Pilgrim vs The World yet you're missing out. Tons of fun! I absolutely loved it. I really like the video game references and overall style of the film. The soundtrack is a blast as well, very high energy, and brings me back to my gameboy and super nintendo days.

I thought Ramona was a pretty cool character so I did a sketch of her and threw on some colors digitally for fun since I'm now on break from school for a little while and I can finally make some art for FUN!

Not only is the movie pretty awesome, but the game is pretty sweet as well. It's an old school side-scroller beat-em up and it's available as a digital download. You can play as Scott, Ramona, Steve, and Kim. There are also 2 hidden characters to unlock and other nifty Scott Pilgrim stuff hidden in it. The 8-bit soundtrack in it is great as well. It's well worth the $10 bucks. So since I've been playing that, I thought it'd be cool to make myself as an 8-bit playable character. I've got some more I want to add to it, but here's what I've got so far.

Final Layouts From Class

The summer semester has come to an end and this is the last of my layouts that I could get completed. This semester seemed to go by so fast. I did pretty well in the class, learned a lot, and had a lot of fun making the layouts. My favorite one is the warped perspective (the 2nd ones). It's going to be a horizontal pan from right to left. Now that I've done a majority of my layouts I'm excited to finish the rest and start playing around with the characters on them. There's a few tweaks that need to be made to these by the end of the film, but I wanted to share what I've done since my last update. Which one is your favorite?

Cupcake Layout - Wonky 06

Here's the approved wonky version for shot 6. We made some minor adjustments to it and I cleaned up a few things. The final shot with animation will probably be a little tighter in on the fruit bowl, just an inch or two inward, but we will see. The hardest part of making a film all by yourself, especially when it's sort of your first, is that it tends to be a bit of an experiment the entire time you're making it. I'm enjoying the direction that it's going though and can't wait to get some animation on these layouts.

Last week I learned a pretty cool technique on how to take my layout and add tone and atmosphere using a graphite stick. It was fun. This is my first attempt at it and took the wonky layout and made it look like a night time scene.

I'm currently working on thumbnails for the next layouts and I'll be drawing a new one this coming week.

I also completed this next shot. This is the more realistic version and the wonky version will be coming this week too as soon as I get it critiqued from my instructor. The layouts are getting a lot easier and faster now that I've laid out where everything is and how the room is going to look.

Here's the wonky version of the same layout below. There are a few different elements in the scene and everything has been given more of a cartoon feel to it. There are things I like and things I'm not sure about, but today my instructor showed me how to add tone and atmosphere to it, and I like it a lot after seeing it that way. I want to take the hanging pots and pans and the plates in the background and add them to the one below. I will probably do different studies and figure out which I like the most.

I haven't updated in quite a while, but I assure you I've been pretty busy. This summer I've been learning all about layout design. Here is one of the shots I've been working on. It has a more realistic style to it. I've been experimenting with this shot in a wonky style, but I feel like I haven't quite found the right blend of the two that I like. I think my wonky version is too extreme. I would like to do a blend of the two and see how that turns out, but I'm running out of time. I have a lot more backgrounds to do for my film. I will upload the wonky one as well and would love to see which one you guys like more. For the moment though, I'm going to stick with this one.

Iron Man Color Sketch

In Celebration of Iron Man 2, I decided to make a quick sketch on some red canson paper. I threw in the yellow in photoshop for his face and arm. I made this after I got done seeing it Friday morning. Nate Kelly, Alison, and I caught the early bird special, which is awesome because we got to see it for $6. If you haven't seen it and you enjoyed the first film, then you'll love the second. It's a fun movie, there's a lot of action, and Scarlett Johansson is in it. I love her. She's awesome. Go see it. :)

How To Train Your Dragon

If you haven't seen it yet get to the theaters and check it out. It's my favorite DreamWorks movie so far. I enjoyed the movie so much that I went a head and picked up the art of book. The book is packed with some fantastic character and environment designs. If you are a visual development artist, animator, or just a huge fan of the art form, I highly recommend picking it up, especially if you loved the film. I was hoping for a few more sketches by Chris Sanders in it, but there's only like one or two. A new artist I discovered in the book is Simon Otto. I really like his style and the style of a lot of the illustrations in the book. I decided to do my own spin on drawing a dragon from this universe and myself riding it. I hope you like it. I tried some new traditional techniques with this one that I liked a lot that I will have to use in some more of my work.

Since the 2D world of animation is very limited when it comes to jobs, I thought I'd take some 3D courses while I'm here so I can always flip between the two if I have to. So here is my first assignment from my 3D Character Animation course. We had to take a ball with a tail and animate him bouncing and interacting with something in a scene. I chose to do a spin off of the Mario games. The style is suppose to be close to Super Mario Bros Wii.

My next assignment though is a full character animation, which you won't see till the end of next month. I never really cared for 3D animation, but I feel like I'm getting the hang of it and it's easy for me if I use it like I would if I were doing it in 2D.

So a few weeks ago Mike Henry submitted a sweet character design topatchtogether.com, which turns out is a really cool site. It's like threadless, but instead of t-shirts you can design your own toys. I just submitted my Mary Sue design.

I think she'd be really cool as a toy/figurine and would look awesome in my kitchen. Hopefully they will approve of my design and it will be up for voting. Batman Color Sketch

I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum so I've been in a huge Batman and comic mood lately. I highly suggest picking that game up if you love Batman and chances are you already have. I based Batman's design off his look in the movie The Dark Knight.

First piece of the new year! Woot!

I tried to combine a lot of people who inspire me and my own style into this pin-up. It's also one of my first traditional medium pieces in a long time. I rendered my initial drawing on colored paper with Copic Markers, Prismacolor Markers, and then Prismacolor Pencils. I really enjoy how this one turned out and would like to do a lot more like this. I'm thinking I should do a bruenette for the next one.

I also have 2 commissions in the works that I hope to have done within the next month or so. One is a portrait piece for a friend's wedding and the other is another portrait piece for a lovely man and his wife in the UK. My personal artistic goal this year to get more commissions, freelance jobs, and personal work out there. My other goal is to have an awesome thesis project, which I will be starting next semester and I still have some preproduction work to get done for my midpoint review this February.

A Surprise test was given to us today in class, but it wasn't a written test like we all thought it'd be. It was an inbetween & clean up test of some Roger Rabbit frames. I'm not sure what Roger Rabbit cartoon it is from. I never got a chance to ask. I know my instructor worked worked on Somethin's Cookin' so I am assuming it might be from that. Anne Rough Model Sheets

For my Traditional Animation 3 class, we are working on a lip-sync animation. I'm using a dialogue piece from, the black and white classic, Young Frankenstein. I designed this character, Anne, to go a long with the animation. Everything is pretty rough, but it gives you and me a good idea of what she looks like in different positions and a few expressions. I would like to do a lot more expressions, some better ones too, haha, and maybe clean things up if I have some time.

Today's my girlfriend's 24th birthday. I did a portrait of her as a birthday present. I had a lot of fun doing this one and it didn't take too long either. Usually digital painting takes me a long time. I used some new techniques and brushes on this one and I like the way it turned out. She loved it as well. :)

I got around to going to the Drawing for Animators workshop after class on Thursday. I got a few good gesture drawings out of it. What's great about these workshops is that they're free and you can come and go as you please. It's really cool that AAU does this for their students to improve.

This weeks assignment was to animate a person and a dog walk cycle. This was a challenge for me since I've never animated a walk where it's in place like this with a panning background. I definitely learned a lot for the next time I do one of these, but for my first run at it, I think it turned out alright. Next time I want to do a more exaggerated walk with more personality or life to it.

Hey folks! Here's a little animation test I did for my Traditional Animation 3 class tomorrow. We had to animate a figure jumping rope while wearing a cape. The idea was to study and figure out the overlapping action between the different things going on. For now this is the final version, but I might play around with it a little more.

I'm finally figuring out my thesis this project semester. I'm getting the story all worked out at the moment, but you'll probably see some character design, storyboards, and an animatic from me. I'm not sure how much of my animatic/story stuff I want to reveal to everyone because I would kind of like people to be surprise or not know what's coming when they actually see the animation in a year to year and a half from now. I'm excited to finally be working on though.

A Princess Night Out

Here's something I've been working on recently. I usually don't do a lot of fan art, but I came up with this idea for one of my projects for The Art History & Ideology of the 20th Century class. One of the topics I could do for my final on was the "Carnivalesque" theory, which deals with the reasons why we go out to "carnival" like events such as parades, parties, events, and things like that. It also has to do with getting away from the routine and doing something different. I thought it would be ironic to see royalty out dancing at a club as if they were just like everyone else. I then of course had to explain the 13 points of the carnivalesque according to my drawing and situation. This is the final result.

I'm really encouraging everyone to go see it because Disney is finally going back to their roots and if it does well then there will be more jobs available for people like me and my friends. I remember the day that Disney made the transition to 3d and started selling off their animation tables. My dreams just shattered and I started to think of other things that I would want to do, but had faith that the medium wasn't lost and now it's back. :)

I can't wait to see it and I hope you do to.

I wasn't sure if I should have drawn in her hair in the background or not. I plan on making her look like she's coming out of the shadows when I color it. I don't know if you'd see much of her hair then. I'm still playing around with it.

Sorry I've been absent lately. I've been busy trying to find work for the summer. I did have a gig lined up to do caricatures, but I'm not sure if that's happening anymore or what's going on there. I'm also taking a few summer courses at school as well. I'm learning Maya, which has been going well. I drew this yesterday and inked it today. I might color it up. This is Misty Coat's character Sayda. I want to draw some more of my friends characters and stuff like that this summer. I think it'll be fun. If anyone has any requests for characters that they'd want to see let me know.

Mary Sue Sculpture

Last semester I was working on a sculpey model of my character Mary Sue. She was really hard to pull off, but I did a decent job. Now that it's all said and done though, I'd like to go back and touch her up a bit. I started with a wireframe of the character, wrapped that with more wire, and tine foil, and then started putting on the sculpey. It was very challenging, but it was a lot of fun as well.

I was inspired by J. Scott Campbell's new sketchbook and decided to play around with the idea of a drawing of my girlfriend. It was drawn on Canon colored paper with a blue col-erase pencil, colored with colored pencils, and inked with Sharpie pens. I thought maybe if people liked the look, I'd do some $10 sketch commissions.

My character design and drawing class took a field trip to the zoo today to draw the animals. I really enjoyed the giraffe exhibit the most. I wish I would have drawn some more elephants though. Oh well maybe next time.
